California’s Indigenous communities will receive an additional 90 days to gather enough endorsements to place their sports wagering proposition on the 2022 election after a judicial body extended the cutoff date, providing them with more time to obtain sufficient public backing.
The “California Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act” – proposed by a group of 18 federally recognized tribes in California – would modify the state’s constitution to legalize sports betting at locations including tribal casinos and licensed racetracks, and impose a 10% GGR tax.
The proposition needed to receive 997,139 valid endorsements by June 21 to appear on the November 2020 election, but due to the time needed for signature verification, the initial signature list needed to be submitted to counties by April 21.
By mid-March, the proposition seemed on track to get enough endorsements, with 971,373 signatures received.
Nevertheless, regions, and quickly the whole state, started issuing stay-at-home directives to limit the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
