Danish gaming firms have created a new body to handle complaints about advertising in the country’s gambling sector.

The formation of the board was revealed last summer, and the new Gambling Advertising Board (Spilreklamenævnet) will offer a platform for individuals and groups to submit grievances about gambling promotional campaigns.

Elite Gaming, the Danish Automobile Industry Association, the Danish Casino Association, Danish Lottery Games, Danish Games, Danish Class Lottery, Agricultural Lottery, Royal Casino, Commodity Lottery, and the Danish Online Gambling Association have all signed agreements to back the initiative.

Jacob Schelfig, a judge at Copenhagen City Court, will act as the organization’s initial chair.

Thomas Marcusen, Clinic Manager at the Gambling Addiction Research Clinic at Aarhus University, and Lars Pint Anderson, Associate Professor at Aalborg University, will both join the board.

Other board members include Kate Jakro, Director of Danish Gaming Law, Morten Lund, Head of Spillebranchen, the Danish Responsible Gambling Organization, Erik Jensen, Copenhagen Casino, and Gunnar Sørensen, Chairman of the Danish Automobile Industry Association.

Jensen and Sorensen will only be engaged in making choices when grievances involve land-based slot machines or gambling houses.

“In the betting industry, we are keenly aware that we have a responsibility to the gaming patrons,” Rønde stated. “With the Gambling Advertising Board, we now have a powerful oversight body that must help guarantee and maintain accountable and moral marketing of gaming.”

The board has received one complaint and has chosen to take on another case on its own initiative.

In July 2022, new rules came into effect in Denmark forbidding the display of gambling brands alongside bank logos and prohibiting the promotion of items like loans and credit cards alongside gambling products.
