The province of British Columbia has revealed plans to establish a separate, autonomous body to oversee gambling operations.

This new agency, the Independent Gaming Control Office (IGCO), will take over the responsibilities currently held by the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB).

The IGCO’s primary focus will be on regulatory policies related to gambling, horse racing, and responsible gaming initiatives.

The IGCO will be headed by a chief executive officer, appointed for a set period, who will be accountable to the legislature through annual reports. The CEO will have the authority to manage public communications independently.

“The IGCO will have the authority, independence, and responsibility to ensure the overall integrity of gambling within British Columbia,” stated David Eby, Minister of Justice.

“This shift will make it easier for us to expel illicit funds from our province. This is one of many concrete actions we are taking to combat money laundering, which has had numerous detrimental effects on British Columbians.”
