The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has expressed delight at the government’s plan for easing COVID-19 restrictions. The BHA stated that they will collaborate with officials to enable spectators to return to racing events as quickly as possible and in a secure manner.
The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, outlined yesterday (February 22nd) how restrictions will be gradually lifted, allowing businesses and locations to reopen, with the goal of removing almost all restrictions by June 21st. In the second phase of the plan, betting shops will be permitted to reopen, which could take effect as early as April 12th. Other gaming venues will reopen in the third phase, starting from May 17th. Sporting events will also welcome spectators in the third phase, with indoor events limited to half capacity or 1,000 people, and outdoor events limited to half capacity or 4,000 people. However, for larger venues with a capacity of 40,000, a maximum of 10,000 fans will be allowed to attend. The BHA welcomed these plans, stating that the horseracing industry has been significantly impacted by COVID-19 measures.
In the beginning of spring, when the UK entered its initial period of confinement, horse racing was initially suspended and did not recommence until the summer months, but enthusiasts were absent with the exception of a few experimental runs.
The governing body for British horse racing stated: “The entire sport has diligently worked to comply with our race day guidelines to enable racing to proceed behind closed doors, sustaining the numerous livelihoods that rely on our industry.” “British horse racing was categorized as an elite sport, which facilitated all of this.
“Nevertheless, we do miss the proprietors, and we do miss the viewers, whose presence invigorates our sport.
“We have implemented additional measures to minimize the risk of virus transmission and are contemplating further alternatives. We will now be engaging with the government to emphasize our capacity to progress beyond the current limitations of essential personnel only as soon as feasible and permit proprietors to return.
“We have organized further discussions with officials, which will enable us to formulate concrete proposals for racing, including potential trial events.”
This plan of action only applies to England, but the Scottish and Welsh authorities are anticipated to announce similar strategies in the upcoming days.
The governing body for British horse racing added that while announcing potential reopening dates was a “very encouraging” indication, the ongoing absence of fans continued to exert financial pressure on the racing industry, so the industry required more assistance.
The British Horseracing Authority stated, “The closure of wagering establishments has exacerbated the situation. We are engaging in discussions with the government regarding financial support.”
