Crown Resorts is compensating its workforce with $1.2 million for salary discrepancies. The gaming company misclassified some staff, leading to underpayment. This error impacted around 200 workers at Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth gambling establishments between 2014 and 2020. Crown has committed to reimbursing wages, retirement contributions, interest, and gratuities to the impacted employees.
The European Union has mandated that Crown Resorts reimburse its workforce after discovering underpayment of wages. The EU determined that Crown had inaccurately calculated salaries and incentives, resulting in underpayment for numerous employees.
This EU ruling follows a A$20 million fine levied on Crown for violating Victorian tax regulations. Crown has expressed regret for the underpayments and declared its dedication to ensuring all workers receive accurate compensation moving forward.
Crown has also pledged to undergo independent audits for the next three years to guarantee adherence to all labor regulations.
This constitutes a reaction to the conclusions drawn from the 2021 Royal Commission examining Casino Operators and Licensing.
The Royal Commission determined that Crown Resorts improperly claimed tax deductions by incorporating the expense of certain promotional activities into the sum disbursed as prizes. Crown Melbourne, operating in Victoria, was discovered to have intentionally concealed the nature of these deductions from the state regulatory body during a crucial period spanning from 2013 to 2021.
This marks the fourth instance where the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has leveraged its amplified enforcement capabilities to discipline Crown for behavior revealed by the Royal Commission. Since acquiring these powers, the VGCCC has levied a cumulative total of A$250 million in penalties upon Crown.
